DRAGnet International Disability Network
(DIDnet)
General Conference Rules & Guidelines
(Revised: October 1994)
Philosophy:
A DIDnet echomail conference is a message base or forum, owned and
distributed by the Backbone using a specified echomail conference name,
functioning around themes or a groups of themes relating to living with
disabilities in a healthy, positive manner; their principle objective is
to facilitate useful two-way information flow among the broader
disability community. The DIDnet philosophy is that fewer well-traveled
conferences are better than many conferences with infrequent message
traffic.
Central Purpose:
Quality information is the most powerful tool of self-empowerment.
DIDnet locates, gathers and distributes quality disability information
resources and management tools for people with diverse disabilities,
their families and care-givers, health, medical and rehabilitation
specialists and for private, non-profit and government agencies. We
cultivate information flow across disability groups and participants
(individuals, specialists, professionals) for greater information
exchange. We promote discussion of difficult disability issues and the
broadening of individual perspectives. We support "electronic support
groups" for responsible economic, social and political role models of,
by and for people with disabilities so members of individual disability
cultures within the broader disability community become productive
members of society at large.
Guidelines:
1) We welcome you to DIDnet and Thank You for your
participation.
2) Keep discussions and information on the defined conference
topic(s) and relating to the subject of living with disabilities.
*Please* DO NOT reply to "test" or "off topic" messages. Let the
moderators deal with such messages (usually via private netmail).
3) Please discuss issues, not personalities and treat others as
you want to be treated. A meaningful exchange of information
requires accepting that people of different disabilities, gender,
race, lifestyles or locations may have very different opinions and
experiences from yours. The object is to learn, not argue.
Keep messages friendly and helpful. Personal attacks (a.k.a.
"flaming") against people whose opinions differ from yours, the
deliberate use of derogatory humor directed at an individual or
class of individuals or the use of personal insults will not be
tolerated.
4) In general, the use of "handles", anonymous names or obvious
aliases is discouraged. Exceptions may be granted for conferences
where sensitive personal issues are discussed providing the use
does not conceal the identity of someone posting malicious
messages. If an alias must be used, please select one which is
generally wholesome and not immediately obvious. Some DIDnet
systems and conferences may allow the use of aliases. Please
check with your local sysop or the DIDnet Conference Moderator for
details.
5) Quote from previous messages only as necessary to establish
the context of your reply. Excessive quoting tends to make the
telephone company richer and sysops poorer.
6) Please respect copyrighted material. When quoting from
published and/or copyrighted sources, you should have permission
from the original authors and/or publishers; you should also fully
and accurately attribute your sources. DIDnet is not responsible
for unauthorized or illegal plagerism of copyrighed material.
7) Please use the "SUBJECT" (Subj:) field when creating or
replying to messages to describe the topic of your message (with a
keyword, if possible). Most BBS software allows users to easily
search on "SUBJ:" headers to pick out messages of interest.
8) DIDnet Administration does not endorse or approve specific
medical, legal and or personal advice. Opinions expressed by
members are their own; they do not reflect those held by DIDnet
management. Advice received from within a DIDnet Conference
should not be followed until it's worth is verify with an
applicable professional. For specific legal, medical, or other
personal questions, consult qualified professionals in your area.
9) DIDnet recognizes a difference between Commercial
Information and Advertising. Commercial Information distribution
is encouraged while Advertising is not.
Commercial information - including pricing - regarding
products or services available for a fee paid to a supplier
or agents which directly relates to the broader disability
community is valuable and important. Reasonable
distribution of this material acceptable. Availability of
such information on DIDnet does not constitute product
endorsement or acceptance.
Advertising, the broadcast of one or more messages engaging
in distinct advertising rhetoric and hyperbole which cannot
be reasonably verified, is not useful information to the
broader disability community. Production and distribution
of advertising or the assisting thereof is considered
Excessively Annoying Behavior and may result in actions by
the Conference Moderator.
If you are in doubt about what constitutes Advertising
contact your DIDnet Conference Moderator
for additional assistance.
10) No DIDnet conference may be gated or reproduced in any form
to any other electronic mail networks, amateur or otherwise.
11) Private messages, person-to-person messages, and messages
dealing with strictly local topics without interest to other
members of the conference should be sent via netmail.
12) Each SysOp receiving this echo is responsible for any and
all traffic that enters this conference from his/her system. This
does not include "In Transit" messages from other systems
receiving the conference, but includes all messages originating
from your system as well as any point or offline mail systems
accessing the network through your system.
13) All messages in this echo MUST have a DIDnet Origin line.
The Origin line should contain the BBS's name and it is
recommended it also contain the city and two letter state code.
The line must not exceed 79 columns including the net/node
inserted by the mailer program and must end with a DIDnet node
address.
14) The DIDnet Prime Directive remains fully in force at all
times. Behavior disrupting the network should be handled (in-so-
far as possible) with dignity and respect while adequate problem
resolution is sought by PRIVATE netmail. If the dispute remains
unresolved, or if you have questions regarding particular DIDnet
Conference rules, please contact the DIDnet Conference Moderator
for further assistance.
